In the context of Graphic Acccounts the term optimize has a very specific meaning. When the Optimize button is down, the program calculates a value for Expenditure which will maintain the balance of the Primary Account (and the Secondary Account if the accounts are linked), at its opening value. If inflation is represented in the system then the value of the account may appear to rise, but by showing all amounts at their value today (click Today's Values), you will see the characteristic flat profile in the chart to confirm that the account balance is stable in terms of its real value.

The Optimize function is turned ON and OFF using the light bulb icon, which can be found on the Account Details/Expenditure tab, and also on the Quick Toolbar.
